1118 617.7 MAY A Manual of Diseases of the Eye Charles H. MAY Medical 1908 Presented by Lt. Col. F.W. Kendle, R.A.M.C, 17/10/27 Lt. Colonel Frederick Wellesley Kendle.
The Heritage Library at the Ballarat Mechanics Institute contains many interesting medical books and journals dating back to the early 18th century. In particular there are some 20 volumes belonging to Lt. Colonel Frederick Wellesly Kendle, a doctor who resided in Ballarat for a time but did not practise here. These text books were later presented to the Mechanics Institute, some containing notes that he had made during his career.
He was born in England in 1852 and was a student at Kings Lynne in 1861. In 1871 he is recorded living in Tottenham Court road as an apprentice to an apothecary in the Borough of Pancras. In 1881 he was a medical student at Kings College Hospital and he must have been an exceptional student as volumes of Medical and Surgical text books contain the plates recording them as being awarded as prizes from the Hospital. He practised in South Molton, Devonshire and is recorded as a surgeon and became involved with the Military in 1910 serving as the 6th Battalion Medical Officer in Devon. His son, George, died in 1915, killed on the first day of the Gallipoli campaign. Ralph Picot from Ballarat visited the family in 1911 and married his daughter Joyce. Following his career with the RAMC he returned from India to become the RMO at the Rehabilitation hospital in Keswick. He and his wife came to Australia in 1926 following his retirement and lived in Webster street for a time. His wife, Mary died in 1927 and is buried in the Ballarat Old Cemetery. He then lived in Victoria Avenue and moved to a retirement home in Adelaide where he not only acted as Medical Officer but also indulged in his hobby of wood carving. He died in 1945 and is buried in the Ballarat Old Cemetery with his wife.

We have only three mainstream religions that are focussed on books , Judaism, Christianity and Mohammedanism . Other religions have their sacred writings but do not hold them in the same authority as the Book -religions do with their sacred tomes and the Breeches Bible represents a turning point in both political and religious power in the troubled times of the16th. and early 17th. Centuries in England . Tyndale began to translate the new testament in 1523 into English with much opposition from the clergy indeed he had to flee to Europe and hide to continue his work and finished around 1534 two years later he was put to death and his body burned .After Henry VIII broke with the Roman Church and declared himself head of the English church in 1537 the English awoke one day to find that they now had two versions of the bible one by Tyndale and one by Coverdale his version being called the Great Bible because of its size ostensibly . Then came Mary and her persecution of things protestant and burning of the English language bibles. This onslaught forced the English scholars to flee to Europe and mainly around Geneva where they found untrammelled access to material for scholarly study and produced a new version called the Geneva Bible the first to be printed with verses .This was an excellent version and it is the bible of Shakespeare , Knox , Calvin and the pilgrim fathers and of the old Scottish church and was printed in Edinburgh . It was small enough to be carried around unlike the Great Bible ,it was first to be mechanically printed and so was considerably cheaper than previous editions and never received full royal patronage only tacit approval . However it was extremely popular and even after James decreed his version to be the official one the Geneva continued to be printed and 1599 seemed to be a year of extraordinary output . Our book is a Geneva Bible with the nickname The Breeches Bible that came about by the translation of Genesis 3:7 by Whittingham, Gilby and Sampson in 1579 and they sewed figge-tree leaves together and made themselves breeches There are many names given to bibles due to translation differences or errata and is an amusing subject in itself .

This is a calalogue of the original Ballaarat Mechanics collection that was dispersed in 1873 to the School of Mines (Refer Speilvogal papers)
See also book no. 36786.
In the 1909 Souvenir booklet of the BMI, it states that ' Very early in our history it was determined to establish a Museum in connection with mining; and Professor Abel, heartily co-operating, offered to prepare a collection of 240 mineral specimens, to be classified and catalogued by him, on condition that the proper cases for their reception and exhibition should be supplied by the committee. The offer was of course gratefully accepted. Professor Abel from time to time gave additional specimens, including two most valuable ones, being large slabs of sandstone bearing the imprints of antediluvian reptiles. Unfortunately, the space at their disposal prevented the committee following up the movement in that direction, and shortly after the establishment of the School Of Mines, the collection was sent to that now famous institution.' The Speilvogal papers show dispersion in 1873.
The entries in the handwritten notebook are now on our database and can be viewed here.
